Welcome to UPBEAT, a unique and innovative program designed to harness the power of rhythm and music to enhance the lives of special kids. At our school, we believe that rhythm is not only the essence of music but also a fundamental aspect of human development and communication. Through UPBEAT, we strive to provide a holistic and enjoyable learning experience that promotes motor planning, coordination, and regulation while fostering a deep appreciation for music and movement.

The Power of Rhythm and Music

Have you ever noticed how music can make you tap your feet, nod your head, or dance to the beat? It's because rhythm has a profound impact on our bodies and minds. From the earliest stages of development, children are exposed to rhythm, starting with the comforting sound of their mother's heartbeat in the womb. This early exposure lays the foundation for the most primitive pathway of regulation, making rhythm an essential aspect of our lives.

The Purpose of UPBEAT

At UPBEAT, we understand the vital role of rhythm in various aspects of life, and we have designed a program that leverages rhythmic sensorimotor input to enhance posture, praxis, and regulation. Our program consists of six segments, each carefully crafted to cater to different aspects of motor development and regulation.

The Six Segments of UPBEAT

Taal: In this segment, children learn to create a mental map of rhythm and become attuned to various beats through drumming and tapping on their bodies.

Gati: Building on the mental map created in Taal, Gati focuses on maintaining momentum while adding music and variations of movements. This helps in developing dynamic motor plans with less reliance on explicit instructions.

Laya: Here, we play with the tempo of the music to explore different postural motions, such as shoulder adduction and abduction. The principles of NDT (Neuro-Developmental Treatment) are incorporated to ensure an accurate experience of range of motion.

Kram: In this segment, we focus on creating memory maps of dance steps in sequence. The principles of PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) are utilized to use functional movements as dance steps.

Nrithya: Encouraging free dance, Nrithya enables children to choose their own movements from the pool of learned movements in previous segments. By tuning into the beat, melody, and tempo, this segment boosts confidence in using movements creatively.

Sur: The concluding segment aims to regulate and organize the child, using music to help them connect with themselves.

The Components of UPBEAT

The UPBEAT program covers an extensive range of components to facilitate holistic development and growth. These components include rhythm, timing, range of motion, sequencing, rotation, stretching, midline crossing, whole-body shaking, body awareness, and movement coordination involving various body parts.

Additionally, UPBEAT emphasizes tapping on the body, weight shifting, postural control, coordination, core strengthening, and conscious diaphragmatic breathing. These components collectively contribute to the enhancement of physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities in our special kids.
